MEDIA RELEASE - Sole supplier of surface flourination services in SA to end exclusivity agreements, following Competition Tribunal decision.

On 7 December 2016, the Competition Tribunal confirmed as an order a consent agreement between the Competition Commission (the Commission) and Pelchem SOC Limited (Pelchem) in which Pelchem agreed to remove exclusivity clauses in the agreements it entered with firms it provides with surface fluorination for various uses.

Yesterday, 04 May 2015, PELCHEM, a subsidiary of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), tragically lost a staff member after he was exposed to Anhydrous Hydrofluoric Acid (AHF), which resulted in severe burns and inhalation exposure. Hydrofluoric (HF) acid is used mainly for industrial purposes (e.g. glass etching, metal cleaning, petrochemical processes and stainless steel manufacturing).

MEDIA RELEASE: Necsa Patents A Low Cost Technology for Manufacturing Phosporus Pentafluoride, A Critical Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Scientists from the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and Pelchem SOC Ltd (the fluorochemical subsidiary of Necsa), have developed a lower cost method to produce high purity phosphorus pentafluoride (PF5) which is used to manufacture  lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) – the electrolyte used in most lithium-ion batteries. The work was done as part of a doctoral thesis at the University of Pretoria and a patent has been filed for the new process.
