South Africa’s nuclear power procurement programme would cost about R400-billion and not R1-trillion, Department of Energy director-general Nelisiwe Magubane said on Tuesday.
Magubane was commenting in a question and answer session at the second South African Carbon Capture and Storage Week at the Gallagher Convention Centre, in Midrand.
Energy Minister Dipuo Peters was quoted as saying last week that the tender proposal for the construction of 9 600 MW of nuclear power by 2030 could be worth at least R1-trillion.
Peters previously indicated that South Africa would announce a decision on its nuclear energy plans before the end of the year. The Minister submitted a proposal to Cabinet.
