JOB PROFILE:
The successful candidate will be responsible for technical leadership of the mechanical engineering function at the SAFARI-1 Research Reactor including mentorship, implementation of the mechanical engineering discipline according to systems engineering principles, and execution of mechanical engineering projects. The successful candidate will be expected to have thorough knowledge and experience in the field of mechanical engineering and expected to have a good appreciation for the systems engineering discipline.
Key Performance Areas:
Key responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:
- Develop and implement mechanical engineering design processes.
- Train and mentor junior engineers in engineering processes.
- Maintain and expand SAFARI-1’s mechanical design basis which will include elicitation of design requirements.
- Create and manage design requirement specifications.
- Drive and implement mechanically oriented projects.
- Create mechanical engineering design solutions according to specifications and requirements (which may include the application of the ASME code).
- Specify, conduct, plan, manage and control analysis required during a project.
- Specify, plan and control mechanical engineering design drawings and draughting.
- Contract expert consultants as and when required and manage the contractual relationship.
- Conduct and witness acceptance and compliance tests.
- Maintain key interfaces required to successfully address technical issues.
- Ensure that customer requirements (performance, schedule and cost) are met.
PERSON REQUIREMENTS:
The qualifications required for the post are:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering - B.Eng (Mechanical).
- An M.Eng or Ph.D in mechanical engineering will be an advantage.
- Have at least 7 years applicable experience in mechanical engineering with a Ph.D degree or 10 years without a Ph.D degree.
- Preferably have experience in a Nuclear environment.
- Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, MS Project).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Good leadership, interpersonal and facilitation skills.
- Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills.
- Multi-disciplinary engineering understanding.
- Project management skills.
- Professional Engineering registration will be an advantage.

DIVISION: SAFARI-1 RESEARCH REACTOR
DEPARTMENT: REACTOR OPERATIONS
VACANCY: LEARNER REACTOR OPERATOR
BAND: B2C

JOB PROFILE
The incumbent (at B2C level) is in Phase I of training as a reactor operator at the SAFARI-1 Research Reactor. The incumbent performs routine tasks under supervision and undergoes extensive theoretical and practical training. Phase I training must be completed within 6 months where after the incumbent qualifies for promotion to B3C level. At B3C level the incumbent is in Phase II training and may perform certain tasks without supervision. Further theoretical and practical training is presented over the next 12 months. Upon successful completion of Phase II training (maximum of 12 months allowed) the incumbent qualifies for promotion to Licensed Reactor Operator at B4C level. The Licensed Reactor Operator is responsible directly to the Duty Shift Supervisor for the execution of all routine tasks and special tasks related to the control and selective maintenance of the Reactor and experiments.
Preference will be given to persons with experience in process plants.
PERSON PROFILE:
- Preferably a Technical Diploma in Engineering. (Grade 12 with Maths and Science on high level will also be considered).
- Prepared to work shifts
- In-service training will be given
- The incumbent must be medically fit in order to qualify as a radiation and chemical worker
- The in-service training will be in English – therefore the ability to communicate well in spoken and written English will be a prerequisite.
- Persons will be required to undergo, amongst others, tests for suitable comprehension of Mathematics and English concepts.
- Have a Code EB (old Code 08) driver’s license at the date of appointment.
- Must have own transport.
- Must be able to work effectively in a team
Career path to AR1 (supervisory) possible with applicable experience and success of internal examination (theoretical and practical).
