Necsa at a glance

Necsa derives its mandate from three regulatory frameworks. The Nuclear Energy Act of 1999, the Nuclear Energy Policy of 2008 as well as directives conferred on it by the Minister of Energy.

Necsa’s primary function according to the Act is to serve as the anchor for nuclear energy research, development and innovation in South Africa. Necsa’s strong research focus is directed mainly at nuclear technology applications particularly relating to medical isotopes production; applied chemistry with an emphasis on uranium chemistry etc.
