Marthinus CJ van Schalkwyk - South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation
Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk is currently serving as the Director of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation in the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). Most recently he was the Political Coordinator at the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York during South Africa’s non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2019 and 2020.
From 2011 till 2018 he served as the Director for Social Development in DIRCO with a particular focus on the UN Commission on Population and Development, UN Commission on Social Development, UNESCO, the World Heritage Committee, the World Health Organisation, and UNAIDS.
Previously he also served at the South African Embassies to the Netherlands (Permanent Representation to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons - OPCW), United Nations (New York, USA), and the European Union (Brussels, Belgium).
Mr Van Schalkwyk has been a member of the South African Foreign Service since 1989 and holds a BA Honours Degree in International Politics and Political Science as well as a BAdmin Degree in International Relations, both from the University of Pretoria.
