Mr Joseph Shayi

Mr Joseph Shayi holds a Master of Business Leadership degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA) as well as a second Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Pretoria. Mr Shayi has an illustrious career of over 20 years in the nuclear industry.  He started as a scientist at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) in the uranium enrichment programme called Molecular Laser Isotope Separation (MLIS). He later was appointed to leadership roles as General Manager and Group Executive at Necsa.

Mr Shayi has served in several committees nationally and internationally on Nuclear Safeguards and non-proliferation matters on behalf of the South African Government. He was a member of the South African Council for the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction from 2001 to 2009. During his tenure at the Non Proliferation Council, he also served in the nuclear subsection, and also the chemical group subsection where he was also a chairman. 

He has experience in the nuclear fuel cycle, research and development, nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation matters. He also established relationships and networks with the IAEA and other experts within the IAEA member states.

Some of his achievements include, managing HEU storage facility at Necsa according to the IAEA requirements and accredited by the USA nuclear regulator to purchase HEU from the USA.
