Mr Michiel Johannes Combrink is appointed to serve as the non-executive director to the Necsa Board as alternate member representing the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. Mr Combrink is a career diplomat with extensive knowledge of the international disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control system with more than 20 years’ experience, including participation in numerous international meetings and negotiations, as well as national structures responsible for the implementation of South Africa’s international obligations.
Mr Combrick was a Member of the Group of Experts supporting the Committee established pursuant to United Nations Security Council resolution 1540 (2004). He was also a South African representative on the Group of Governmental Experts on “Missiles in all its aspects also a South African representative on the Group of Governmental Experts on “Verification in all its aspects, including the role of the United Nations in the field of verification.”
His current role at DIRCO includes managing South Africa’s relations and interactions with multilateral treaties, organisations and arrangements in the area of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, their means of delivery and conventional arms.
Mr Combrink holds a Master of Diplomatic Studies (with distinction) title of research “Nuclear energy security: A critical analysis of the North-South diplomatic discourse on the nuclear fuel cycle, 2004-2011” from the University of Pretoria. He also has Bachelor of Arts (including major in Political Science) from Stellenbosch University.
