Nuclear technologies and advancements are back on the agenda
ESI Africa spoke to Sengiphile Simelane, Group Executive: Power and Energy at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) about the role of nuclear in the SA energy mix.
He points out that right now this basically comes in the form of the only operational nuclear power plant in the country (and Africa until the Egyptian El Dabaa project is completed).
“Nuclear energy provides a clean and reliable source of electricity. There is no carbon emissions and that makes it one of the most important sources of energy in the country, especially given the fact that we’re now trying to decarbonise,” he said.
