A new collaboration between Sibanye-Stillwater and South African Nuclear Energy Corporation is set to push forward the development of nuclear medicine technologies aimed at improving cancer treatment.

Announced on 17 April, the partnership will focus on developing a radioactive isotope derived from rhodium for use in targeted cancer therapies. The project centres on Palladium-103 (Pd-103), an isotope already used in brachytherapy to treat localised tumours such as prostate cancer, by delivering radiation directly to affected areas while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Under the first phase of the collaboration, Necsa will test and verify rhodium for radionuclide production standards and carry out chemical processes to produce high-purity Pd-103. The aim is to support its future use in Targeted Radionuclide Therapy.

A second phase will expand the partnership to explore broader nuclear medicine applications using rhodium and other platinum group metals (PGMs) produced by Sibanye-Stillwater. These metals are already used in diagnostic imaging and medical devices.

Necsa CEO Loyiso Tyabashe said the partnership will strengthen South Africa’s role in radiopharmaceutical innovation and support the development of next-generation precision cancer therapies.

“This collaboration brings together complementary strengths to advance research in nuclear medicine, while deepening South Africa’s sovereign capability in radiopharmaceutical innovation.

Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Richard Stewart said the initiative supports the company’s strategy to find new applications for its metals through research and development, particularly in healthcare.

The move reflects a broader shift in mining, as companies look to diversify into high-value, technology-driven sectors and unlock new demand for critical minerals beyond traditional uses.
